New Rodeo Coach C. J. Aragon Brings a History of Results

I’m extremely excited for the Sul Ross State University Rodeo team to officially kick off our 2018-19 season September 20-22 in Portales, New Mexico at the Eastern New Mexico University College Rodeo. I took the reins of the program in August and plan to bring a new direction to the team this year. My decisions on coaching this team stem from eleven years of experience and sending seven different teams to qualifications in the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming.

This year the strength of the Sul Ross State University Rodeo Team comes from our women’s team.  Our top two women return from last year’s team along with few new recruits.  Fellow seniors Brooke Hester and Shaylyn Hudson anchor the team.  Both Hester and Hudson finished in the top 15 in the Southwest Region standings last year and look to earn CNFR qualifications this year.  We also added Aspyn Dent, a transfer from Weatherford College.  Dent qualified for the CNFR before and looks to be an immediate contributor to the team this year. Our women’s team promises great improvement this year, through very good returning upperclassmen, some talented freshmen, and some eager sophomores.

For the Men’s Rodeo Team, Logan McCasland holds the distinction as the lone returner from last year’s team.  However, the young talent makes up for the losses.  Freshman all-around hand, Brandon Lansford, will compete in the saddle bronc riding, calf roping, and team roping.  Ethan Landt and Cade Allen will showcase their skills and ride bareback horses.  Homero Lara will ride bulls for the Sul Ross Rodeo Team. Freshman steer wrestler, Cooper Hurt, rounds out a talented group of freshmen for the Men’s Rodeo Team for 2018. Our men’s team may be young but the talent promises some great rodeo action.

I look forward to my part in the 73^rd annual Sul Ross State University Rodeo, September 27-29, at the S.A.L.E. Arena.  The Rodeo starts nightly at 7pm, and tickets are available at the gate. Come on out and see our SR Rodeo Team reach new goals and stomp the competition!
