In the 198os comedy sci-fi movie-trillogy “Back to the Future” Marty McFly (played by Michael J. Fox) gets into a time-traveling DeLorean and travels back and forth in time to ensure his parents fall in love and to save our space-time continuum. In “Back to the Future II” McFly visits the future and  finds it full of amazing technology like hoverboards, flying cars, video phone calls, and automatic dog walkers. This amazing future date McFly travels to?  October 21, 2015! As we are approaching the fictional date in real life, it’s fun to see what the movie got right about the future of today and what it didn’t.

In celebration, the Bryan Wildenthal Memorial Library will host a showing of the first movie of the series “Back to the Future” with snacks on October 24th at 6pm in the library’s conference room. We’ve also put together a related display of books and technologies with the theme “The future ain’t what it used to be”. The selected books were all written by authors in the past about the ways that they envisioned the future- of man-kind, of war, and a variety of topics. Did the city of Alpine plan a future that came to fruition? What did the director of health education in 1929 think it took to build future champion athletes? Does “Mexico  Today: county with a great future” still hold true in 2015? Has Bertrand Russell’s “fear that science will be used to promote the power of dominant groups, rather than to make men happy” come true today? Browse the display to find out and then speculate on your own version of the future. Marvel at the old film formats in the display case and wonder how we’ll be consuming movies and pop culture in 10 or 50 or 100 years.
