Several librarians enjoyed the Tom Lea Retrospective opening and reception at the Museum of the Big Bend on September 18th. The art was so exceptional, that it inspired a special two-case display in the Wildenthal Library, located on the first floor near the Information Desk.
The selections include several printed plates, books, and pamphlets from the Wildenthal Library collection which give fans a well-rounded view of what inspired Tom Lea in his personal life as well as an examination of the work that he produced.
Special to the display are several volumes and a coin from the Van Robinson collection. The coin, a California commemorative half dollar, is illustrated in Tom Lea’s book “Battle Stations” which contains two of Lea’s most popular “Life” magazine stories about World War II combat. The coin illustration appears in the story “A Grizzly from the Coral Sea” in which Lea recounts his experiences aboard the U.S.S. Hornet. In this story the coin is a significant symbol of luck and a reminder of home for Lea’s friend in combat and it’s meaning is woven throughout this powerful narrative of war.A complete listing of items concerning Tom Lea at the Bryan Wildenthal Library can be found by searching the library’s catalog. Patrons may check out circulating items in this display with their campus ID or library Community Borrowers card.
The Tom Lea exhibit at the Museum of the Big Bend is currently open to the public and is highly recommended for anyone who is interested in art and history in the Big Bend region.
