President’s Perspective November 2018

As we all think about and anticipate the Holiday Season a sense of gratitude – of giving thanks – always comes to my mind.  Sul Ross State University was founded 100 years ago on the concepts of scholarship, caring and service to others.  Training teachers in this frontier area of Texas who would then commit their lives to serving and educating the next generation of Texans was the purpose of the founding of Sul Ross.  Although a century later we do a lot more than train teachers, those concepts that were true in our founding remain true to this day.  The commitment to scholarship and research, to caring for our students and our communities and a strong sense of responsibility to serve this vast frontier remains.

I am thankful for the opportunity to serve this amazing institution. I am thankful for the passion of so many alumni, supporters and friends of Sul Ross.  The support and generosity of so many has truly made the difference in helping Sul Ross grow into the university it is today.  This issue of Frontier View is dedicated to those of you that have provided important support to Sul Ross this year.  We are grateful for your support and especially thankful for the ongoing support that many have already committed to.

There is no greater satisfaction in this work than to know personally how this university changes the lives of our students and their families.  I have gotten to know so many students in Alpine, Uvalde, Del Rio and Eagle Pass that came to Sul Ross with dreams and hopes and ambitions.  And watching those aspirations turn into reality through their “Sul Ross experiences” never fails to remind me why I began this work 40 years ago.

Our commitment to each of you that support Sul Ross is to always be good stewards of your gifts and to continue every day to make Sul Ross a better university for future generations of students.

Happy Holidays and thank you!

Bill Kibler
President

  • This newsletter, and other ideals which you express make me even more proud to know that I graduated from Sul Ross. You obviously have limited budgeting (doesn’t everyone?), but your academics, and athletics are sources of pride.
